This has been a life saver for me

Since my accident I was having a hard time getting out of my bed. I’ve been struggling for 4 months now and I’m still using it. It has helped me in so many ways. Getting out of bed, standing beside the bed, and even turning over in my bed. I’ll be keeping this forever. Still using it, not sure I want to take it off.

Serves 2 purposes

This was recommended to my husband by my brother-in-law. He bought one to help with getting in and out of bed after he had back surgery. My husband bought it for that purpose, but it also serves another one: it keeps him from rolling out of bed at night. It's sturdy, was easy to assemble and install, and has really helped him.

Might work, might not work.

'Easy assembly' is a common misnomer. It helps to ignore the confusing directions and just try to duplicate the product picture. I was at step 9, insert the two screws. The screws, however, were too big for the holes they were supposed to go into. No problem, I'll call the company and have them send me two replacement screws. Not so simple. A complaint would have to be filed first, with a complaint number and a lot of superfluous information before I could be transferred to the Quality Solutions Team. I was put on hold until the call was dropped. I called back but never did get to the QST. I was told they would need a video. Of what, two screws? Yes, and my attempt to insert them. Forget it, I said, I'll just go to the hardware store and get two screws. Oh, no, can't do that because their screws have a unique thread. So I had to make a video, shoot a couple stills, and email it all. During the process it was discovered that this product would not work with an articulating bed like mine. So, a good hunk of the morning went wasted. I'm going to take it apart and send it back.

With a little bit of advance planning, this item is perfect for your needs.

I'm no longer one who is taking care of parents, grandparents, friends, etc. I am now one of the elderly. And I commend those who do, rather than carting us over to the old folks home. One of the problems I'm currently having is getting up in the morning with a full bladder, and attempting to make it to the bathroom before the dam breaks. Trying to sit up without anything to assist me usually pressed my stomach muscles into my bladder which promptly began to release the liquids gathered in it during the night. This is all most embarrassing; even if it is your family trying to help you. Nothing is more distressing than urinating all over the floor, your clothes, and the bathroom. I hope that this review is not giving you TMI, but I now have this new device so that I can pull myself up with my arms and not put any pressure on my bladder. I am no small man... 270 to be exact... and having no more problems was getting up in the morning. The Medline bed assistance bar not only helps me sit up in the bed, it is sturdy enough to hold onto as I get my stability. It also positions me when I go to sit down because I sit just to the left of the bar, swing my feet around, and wind up in a perfect position for sleep. Prior to getting this , I rolled off the bed 3 times, but fortunately didn't damage anything. Now, I can't roll off because the assist bar hits right at my hip , making that almost impossible. Very sturdy, good instructions, and I installed it absolutely by myself. Pretty good or someone who has trouble lifting a fort knife or spoon. Whether you think you might need this but just aren't quite ready to commit, consider it a luxury for now. Oh, I almost forgot about the pouch. It in can hold all your remotes, books, cell phone, tablet, glasses, and whatever else you need. I also hung my man bag around it. THIS WAS A WONDERFUL PURCHASE!!!

It's a lifesaver, per my elderly mother

Mom has wicked arthritis, and hearing her attempt to get out of bed in the morning was -- no kidding -- what it must sound like to hear someone begging for mercy from being tortured. The hideous pain, especially in her knees, was exhausting to her. While visiting Mom, I found this and ordered it. It arrived on time, and I easily assembled and installed it. The difference it makes has been nothing short of amazing. The price was quite reasonable, but Mom said that in just two mornings, it had more than paid for itself for the relief she has felt. Getting into bed is much easier for her, too. In fact, once it was installed, I never again heard her get out of bed to start her day. The difference in Mom has been wonderful. I went from believing she was incapable of caring for herself to believing she can now stay in her own apartment. Mom also said she went from being fearful of losing her independence to being confident she can continue living on her own. A number of seniors and others with mobility issues have learned about Mom's experience in recent days and plan to buy one for themselves. Mom's doctors want her to spend more time relaxing with her feet elevated above her heart. She would never do as directed because of the pain involved in getting in and out of bed. Now she will be able to rest as directed several times per day. I am so thankful that this product is available! The pouch is an added bonus, as she can keep her phone and water very handy while in bed.

Perfect for my raised twin bed

I have a tall bed frame that is raised (I use the bottom for storage) so I was worried this wasn’t tall enough but this was still perfect! The only downsides are 1. The safety strap is not removable. I wanted the bar to be able to be move able depending on my sleeping needs, so I had to cut the strap off with scissors to prevent it from being bunched up under the mattress. And 2. The bar is covered in multiple places with large safety stickers that are not removable, it it’s pretty unsightly. A pamphlet would have been fine but maybe it’s a legal requirement idk. I plan to take some time with goo gone or rubbing alcohol to remove them. I’m 160lbs and the bar is steady to lean on even without me using the safety strap, but I believe the strap would be necessary for anyone heavier than me. It is also stable for me to pull myself up from a laying to seated position, your body weight on the mattress will keep the bar in place. Perfect for making sure I don’t roll out of bed when I’m tossing and turning. Very easy to assemble. Would recommend & have already shared with a few friends.

I wish I could give more than 5 stars!

I wish I could give more than 5 stars! After a 6 week hospital stay, coming home felt great, but it was a hard transition not having the hospital bed. My bed was, of course, much more comfortable. But my injuries made it difficult to maneuver in a regular bed. Found this product by accident while looking for handles for the bathroom toilet. I’m so glad I did, bought it, my brother put it together for me, he said he was able to put it together quite easily. I have a queen size bed, he did install it with the safety straps to secure it to the opposite side of the bed frame. It fit well between the mattress and box spring and is very sturdy. I immediately felt more able to maneuver in bed, the bar also helps with sitting up and standing up. The bar alone makes this product amazing and well worth 5 stars. The addition of the storage pouch makes me wish I could give more stars. To have the close storage for a few essentials made this even better. I had my Mom sit and lay on my bed, and then use the bar to sit up and get out of bed. She was amazed at how easy it was to use and how much more comfortable she felt. (She is 83 and has arthritis in her wrists, so pushing up on the bed she said is so uncomfortable - but with the bar, she was able to avoid hyperextending her wrists). I have ordered another for my Mom already. Extremely happy with the purchase and so glad I found this item while doing s search for toilet seat rails. (Now if only I can be as lucky with those bars) Anyone with challenges moving around in bed, or with sitting up in bed, can benefit from this product. Side note: Please be sure you do have a bed with a traditional mattress and box spring though, as I’m not sure if it work with just a mattress on a platform. Addition: Both myself and my Mom now each have one on our beds, and have been using them for several months. I still use mine since it’s taking quite awhile for my leg & ankle to heal. My Mom has said it has made such a huge difference for her in regards to getting in and out of bed, as well as turning over onto her side. One of my best Amazon finds to date!

Very Useful, Highly Recommend!!

This wonderful product became a part of my life a few months ago after surgery. I ordered it and left the box in the bedroom. I had my surgery, came home and hubby had it thoroughly attached to the side of my bed with the strap that comes with it. Now, I have an adjustable bed (not trying to brag mind you, just trying to paint a clear picture) so I wasn't 100% sure if I would need this item. I mean, after all, I could just push the button, have the head of the bed go all the way up and then just zip right out of bed, right? Ha ha, wrong! I had back surgery and even with the bed in the full upright position, I could not even get near the edge of the bed without holding on to the assist bar and slowly turning myself sideways. My muscles were just too weak and spasming like crazy at first. All I can say is thank goodness I went ahead and got this!! So obviously I definitely needed it to get out of bed, but I also needed to hold onto it while lowering myself down onto the bed. Then I had to use it every time I needed to switch positions in bed. This bar saved me a lot of extra pain and aggravation and allowed me to have some amount of independent mobility when I would have had little to none. That in itself was the main reason for the purchase and is its greatest feature. However, that's not all! Oh no, my friends. This baby has a nice deep pocket on the inside where you can keep your little silver bell that's meant to keep your family at your beck and call (they all pretended they didn't hear it), and your cell phone (so you can call & text them when they ignore the bell, plus everything else you need your phone for of course), and your remotes, maybe some reading glasses and a magazine or small book, and even the odd piece of chocolate if you're into that type of thing, I don't like to judge. But yeah, it holds more than it looks like it does! Also worth noting (and again, I'm not rubbing it in) is that if you have an adjustable bed like I do, or you are renting a hospital bed during a recovery period, you may worry that this won't stay in place because the mattress will be moving. We thought the same thing (after it was already on luckily, or we may have decided against using it). I'm not sure if it actually moves any or not because I was always in the bed when I was adjusting it and therefore could not see the assist bar from the outside, but It was always 100% stable and secure. If it did move ever so slightly it did not affect the way it works or is used at all. This is a very useful item. I kept it on my bed for two and half months after my surgery and only just had it taken off a couple of weeks ago. We are keeping it because we know how much it will be needed should any of us have a similar surgery in the future. I highly recommend it!

Sturdy, exactly as shown, good instructions, been very useful

I am very happy with this. My Mom is 85 and fell out of bed, so I got this for her. They put thought into assembling. Even if someone is older and a little confused they'd be able to figure it out. One spot had oval shaped holes so there's no way to put the wrong part on. The instructions we were like verbal instructions, saying 'Notice one row of holes is smaller and has 10 holes. On the other side there are 4 holes that are larger.' It helped me too! They have a strap the goes around the mattress for someone who may try to push the rail away. My Mom doesn't need that, her weight on the bed keeps it in place perfectly well and I think he strap would annoy her to lay on. She said the rail helps her get out of bed. Both her rotator cuffs are injured so the rail being there has made it much easier. She also said she is sleeping better since she's not afraid of falling. It's sturdy, the pouch lets her keep her glasses and pone within an easy reach considering her shoulder issues - it has been exactly what we needed.
