After initially washing the container, all you have to do is install the filter, fill with water, and turn it on. The fountain starts right away without any priming and it is extremely quiet! I have the 3.2 liter unit for my 20 lb dog and the water lasts several days before needing a refill. I leave the pump on all the time to keep the water moving, filtered, and clean. The fact that the water is constantly being filtered makes it the purest that water can be and that along with the stainless steel bowl, helps to prevent any sign of biofilm. I wash the bowl between refills anyway just to make sure. They recommend that you change the filter once per month so I ordered the unit with 6 filters. After a few days, the unit started to make some noticeable noise. Upon investigation I found that when the water level gets low, it is below the drain tube so you start to hear a waterfall sound. This is good in a way since you can consider this an alert to let you know that it is time to refill the bowl. The only thing that I don’t like about this unit is that the power cord is not removable from the top. I ran the power cord through a cable raceway up to a plug. Since I can’t unplug the cord from the top, I have to leave the top on the floor when I need to refill the bowl. Other than that, I am very pleased with this unit and my dog took to it right away.
My dog seems to love it. He drinks more water now than he did before out of his regular bowl. I don’t change the water as often it’s every three days. It looks good and the water flow is great and it’s so easy to assemble. I had a problem with my Maltipoo Oreo he just wasn’t drinking water. He would walk up to his Bowl smell it and walk away. I would wash his bowl every time I change the water which was quite often in a day. I highly recommended.

My pets love this fountain. Keeps the water fresh and they have all been drinking more. Two small 7-10 lb dogs and 2 cats. It’s the same size as the last bowl I had but I have to fill it up more often because they’ve been drinking more. I also notice I have to change the litter box more frequently because my cat is actually hydrated. Great water bowl but now I spend more on cat litter! lol
